5 Signs you Need to Switch to a New Helmet

Does your helmet have an expiration date?

Well, this blog will help you out with much more than just knowing the service life of your helmet.

Can you spot extensive scratches on your helmet or feel discomfort while wearing it? If yes, then it’s the right time to buy a new one.

Hard hats and suspensions should be inspected and replaced whenever needed. Safety helmets are one of the vital elements of your personal protection equipment since it protects the most important part of your body i.e. the brain. You need to also remember that the lifespan of industrial helmets depends on how you take care of it. Let's get started.

What is the lifespan of your safety helmets and suspensions?

Technically, it’s a big N-O!

Unlike food products, safety helmets don’t come with an expiry date. Remember this: MSA hard hat helmets should be used no longer than 5 years while the suspensions should be replaced after 12 months.

Note: This is calculated from the date of first use.

MSA Hard Hats have the date code that indicates when the shell was molded. Date codes are molded into the underside of the shell’s brim with the year and month in which that specific shell was molded. While, the suspension is marked with the month and year of manufacture. Even markers or labels are used to identify the date the helmet was first placed for service.

Other than this, you need to know that the service life of your helmet entirely depends on the environment, application and use in daily life.

Things you should inspect into your helmet:

  • Dents – It can cause weak spots.
  • Scuffs or scores – It can weaken your helmet by thinning out the shell.
  • Discolored or chalky surface – The surface weakens due to the harsh UV rays or strong chemicals. This means you need to replace it immediately.
  • Frayed or damaged suspension straps - In such cases, remove the webbing and replace it with a new one.

You should also check the plastic attachment clips to make sure they aren’t weakened or broken as well.

Disclaimer: Always use accessories made by the original manufacturer for the specific model and size. ASE Group believes in supplying high-quality products that are tested and certified with the manufacturer suspension installed and approved as a system.

Using an incorrect headband and web can reduce the amount of impact protection desired from your helmet.

Summing it up!

To be frank, your hard hat is one of the most robust safety product that need proper care for longer service life. It’s your responsibility to inspect your helmet as you start your day and even a few times during the day. Don't hesitate to change it even if you suspect a small defect in it.

Also make a habit of cleaning your hard hat, headband and webbing regularly, either with a cleaning solution or soap and warm water. Using chemicals, abrasives, solvents, scrapers, knives or abrasive tools to remove debris would deteriorate the shell. Caring for your helmet is like caring for your ownself.

Your safety is in your hands, take it seriously!!
